How the calculation works

Your TFSA contribution room on any day in 2026 is the sum of every annual dollar limit from your first qualifying year through 2026, minus every dollar you have ever contributed, plus every dollar you withdrew in 2025 or earlier. This formula applies only within the continuous-eligibility scope above. Use the CRA worksheet for other histories.

Three rules do most of the work. Room accrues for a full calendar year even if you turned 18 in December of that year. Room does not accrue for any year in which you were a non-resident of Canada for the whole year. And withdrawals are added back to your room on January 1 of the next year — never sooner — which is why a same-year re-deposit can create an excess contribution.

Use this simplified tool only if you are currently a Canadian resident aged 18+, eligible every year since your selected start year, with no excess-contribution history or special distributions. Exclude qualifying transfers and exempt contributions from both totals. Otherwise use CRA’s worksheet and dated records.

Checking against CRA My Account

CRA shows your room as of January 1 of the current year. It is built from what your banks and brokers reported for the previous year, so it can lag if an institution filed late or you opened an account recently. To reconcile: take the My Account figure, subtract every contribution you have made since January 1, and ignore this year's withdrawals. If the figures differ, reconcile dated transactions with your institutions and CRA before contributing.

If you have over-contributed

This does not calculate an excess-contribution tax or the amount to withdraw. CRA generally taxes excess amounts at 1% per month and says to remove a remaining excess promptly. Use CRA guidance and dated transaction records; a negative total here is a warning to check those records.

Frequently asked

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?
$7,000, the same as 2024 and 2025. The dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500.
What is the total room for someone who has never contributed?
$109,000 for a person who was at least 18 and resident in Canada in every year from 2009 to 2026.
Do withdrawals give me my room back?
Yes, on January 1 of the following year. A withdrawal in 2026 is added to your 2027 room.
What happens if I contribute more than my room?
Generally 1% of the highest excess amount in each month. This tool does not calculate that tax; use CRA guidance and dated records.
Why does the CRA My Account figure differ from this calculator?
CRA's figure is as of January 1 and depends on what institutions reported. Subtract contributions made since January 1 and check that every account has been reported.
Does investment growth inside the TFSA use up room?
No. Room is only reduced by money you put in. Growth, dividends and interest do not count, and losses do not restore room.
