Before you act on a money headline

A striking headline is a starting point. Use this worksheet to separate what changed from what you might do about it.

  1. Exact claim

Copy the sentence and keep its link and date.

  2. Primary evidence

Filing, regulator, official data or signed agreement? Record the source and period.

  3. What changed

Level versus growth rate, forecast versus result, pledge versus enforceable commitment?

  4. Who is affected

Which people, province, business or account type actually falls within the claim?

  5. Your own numbers

Amount, timing, costs and alternatives: leave blank until verified.

  6. What would change your mind

Missing evidence, downside, and when to check again.

These are critical-reading prompts, not personalised recommendations.

Two examples from our reporting

AI electricity costs: a promise that data-centre developers will cover their costs is a pledge. It does not establish household savings. Look for the project terms and who must pay for additional infrastructure. Read the analysis of Canada's electricity-cost principles.

Grocery competition: removing a property restriction clears one obstacle to a competitor. It does not demonstrate that another store opened or prices fell. Those outcomes need their own evidence. Read how grocery property restrictions work.

Help shape a future toolkit

We are exploring a fuller set of worksheets for checking financial claims and organising source notes. Nothing is for sale. If you would use it, tell us which worksheet would help and whether a one-time CAD 9 price would feel worthwhile.
